DAF DISCUSSIONS - SUKAH 25

YITZCHAK LEVINE asked:

HOW CAN THE GEMARAH ASK ABOUT AVEL AND SUKKAH HOW CAN YOU BE AN AVEL DURING SUCCOS IT IS EITHER KNOCKED OFF OR IT DOESNT START TILL AFTER PLEASE E MAIL ME BECAUSE I DONT ALWAYS HAVE TIME TO GO THRU ALL THANKS

Sam Kosofsky also asked:

I don't understand the whole discussion about an ovel on Sukkot. The way I remember it there is no avaylus on Yom Tov or Chol Hamoed. There's no shiva at all. Psychologically the person who lost a close relative probably mourns in his heart. I don't see how anyone can legislate otherwise. Yet there is no official aveylus during Yom Tov or chol hamoed.

The Kollel replies:

The type of Avel to which the Gemara is referring is not necessarily a person who Halachicly qualifies as an Avel. Rather, he is someone who is entrenched in the emotional sorrow of losing a relative. A person is required to be in a state of happiness in the Sukah, and the Gemara tells us that even such a person who is in a state of mourning is required to sit in the Sukah.

The Kollel replies:

Sitting in the Sukah is not a "Davar sh'b'Tzin'a," but rather a "Davar sh'b'Parhesiya" (as the Gemara itself implies a few lines later, regarding a Chasan, see Rashi DH Tza'ar Chasan).
