DAF DISCUSSIONS - SUKAH 23

Marc Chipkin asked:

The Gemara asks that if you wanted to use an animal as a sukkah wall you would have the problem of the space between its legs. It gives an answer that you fill that space with plants etc- but why wouldn't the legs be good on their own as a tzurat hapetach?

Marc Chipkin, Johannesburg, South Africa

The Kollel replies:

The Magen Avraham and Mishnah Berurah (on Shulchan Aruch OC 430:11) seem to learn that part of the problem is that if the animal has a space between its legs taller than three Tefachim, but ostensibly less than ten Tefachim where there is no Halachah of Tzuras ha'Pesach, the Mechitzah becomes Pasul because of "Gediyim Bokim Bo" -- "goats go through it" (see Shabbos 97a).

All the best,

Yaakov Montrose
