Tuts Email asks:

Question on the concept of 'Tafasta Merubah Loi Tafasta'.

Scenario

I say I want to go to Adass Minyan tomorrow at 6.30am in order to be sure I will be at my Shiur at 8.30 !

But u say to me " u can not make it normally even for the 7.30am minyan yet now you want to try to get up for 6.30am minyan!? Ie don't go to 6.30 minyan but try to get to 7.30 minyan".

Then is the above scenario - Tafasta Merubah Loi Tafasta?

To me it seems so!

But according to Rashis pshat on Daf 5 of Suka that there is a "shakran" involved in the Tafasta Merubah concept; then it is not.

Pls explain

Rashi's opening words suggest that he learns like Tosfos - that in a case where the larger number incorporates the smaller one - e.g. when it is a question of two or ten, then you must choose two, since ten includes two; whereas if you choose ten and it ought to be two, you will have made a false claim.

I must admit though, that I do not fully understand how that fits into our Sugya, as I don't see how a small face is not included in a large one. Perhaps what it means is that whereas a small face will grow into a large one, a large one will not grow into a small one.
