DAF DISCUSSIONS - YOMA 28

Meir Eliezer Bergman asked:

The Gemoro (25b) discusses whether the Shochet did Kabolas HaDam or the Zorek, and mentions disadvantages for both. Given these disadvantages, why was there not a separate Kohen to perform Kabolas HaDam? (He could then pass the bowl to the Zorek when all blood is collected!)

The Kollel replies:

It seems that one must say that even though disadvantages are mentioned for both the Shochet and the Zorek receiving the blood, Chazal nevertheless knew that these drawbacks were not severe enough actually to create a position for an additional Kohen. One sees in the Gemara that Ben Katin made 12 taps for the sink for the 12 Kohanim (not including the Shochet) so it was clearly obvious that there were no more than 12 Kohanim working on the Tamid. After all, the possibility that:

1. the person sprinkling might stop receiving the blood before it was all in the vessel in his eagerness to sprinkle it or

2. a non-Kohen might receive the blood since he was allowed to slaughter, were not highly likely eventualities.

Therefore the question of the Gemara was only which possibility was more likely than the other - if (1) was more probable, the Shochet should receive the blood but if (2) was more probable the Zorek should receive it, but neither possibility was so imminent to justify introducing a totally new Kohen into the Avodah of the Tamid.
