DAF DISCUSSIONS - PESACHIM 4

E. S. asked:

Tosefot cites the Yerushalmi that women are not believed by bedikas chametz (because they are "atsliot"). In what other cases are women not believed as equally as men are? Specifically, may women become chaverim in regards to being trusted in taking terumah and maaser? If so, what process would they go through to become neeman in terumah and maaser? Thank you.

E. S., US

The Kollel replies:

To my knowledge, the only difference in the believability of men and women is in matters that involve Tirchah, as Tosfos explains.

The Rambam (Hilchos Ma'aser, 10:3) says that the daughter of an Am ha'Aretz who marries a Chaver, must accept upon herself Divrei Chaverus. From here it is clear that a woman can become a Chaver. He also says (10:2) that the family members of a Talmid Chacham automatically have the status of Chaver. This implies that an unmarried woman (e.g. the unmarried daughter of a Talmid Chacham) could have the status of Chaver.

The process of becoming a Chaver would presumably be the same for a woman as for a man - she would accept upon herself Divrei Chaverus in front of three Chaverim.
