DAF DISCUSSIONS - PESACHIM 43

ISAAC SALEM asked:

The Gemara brings a braita :Sior Yitzaref VeNotetno LaKelevo VeHaochelo VeArbayim.

How can the same Beraita be 2 different Tanna'im:

R. Meir Sior Yitzaref, v'Ha'ochlo b'Arba'im;R. Yehuda says Noten Lakelev. The beraita doesn't fit all the way with R. Meir and doesn't fit all the way with R. Yehuda; it's a combination of both. Maybe you can help me understand it!!

Yitzchak Salem, BROOKLYN, NY

The Kollel replies:

We find many times that what is seemingly a single statement in a Mishnah or Beraisa can be understood only according to the opinions of two different Tana'im. We very often find it in two statements which seem to qualify one another, but actually the Gemara finds them contradictory and says they are the view of two Tana'im. This probably can be attributed to the fact that the Tana'ic literature was specifically written concisely.
