DAF DISCUSSIONS - CHULIN 86

H. David Levine asks:

How had he found two full loaves, meat, and wine for sabbath when it sufficed for him a bushel of carob from one week to the next? Necessities of Sabbath don't appear in the gamara, on 86. That's

actually the cause for the question. It's only touted that he

subsided on a bushel of carob, but I am moved to ask, how does onefulfill the obligations for Sabbaths, Roshei Chodoshim, etc., on carob.

Also it seems that a, "bas kol," hare gave a clear decision concerning the monetary adjudication, of, "ten gold." What differs from other places when we see that we do not listen to a bas kol?

The Kollel replies:

Concerning food for Shabbos, see Ta'anis 25a that his wife didn't have what to bake for Shabbos bread. The Benayahu (of the Ben Ish Chai) there records a discussion about how Rebbi Chanina used the Kav of carobs (one Kav is 24 Beitzim, egg sizes). He quotes one opinion that takes into account three meals on Shabbos, each of which consists of 3 Beitzim of carobs. According to that opinion, it seems he wasn't able to obtain bread! According to the Benayahu's own opinion, the carobs were for weekday meals, and on Shabbos he somehow obtained bread for the Mitzvah. This doesn't contradict the Gemara that says he was sustained by one Kav of carobs, as that refers to his weekday needs.

Concerning the Bas Kol, the Ben Yehoyada (also of the Ben Ish Chai) here, DH Amar Lei, suggests that there was no real Bas Kol here, only an expression that through Rebbi's statement the 40 gold coins became known. Also, only Rebbi Yehoshua says that in all places we ignore a Bas Kol, but others disagree and maintain that a Bas Kol is listened to when it is not in contradiction to regular rules (see Tosfos to Yevamos 14a, DH Rebbi Yehoshua).

All the best,
