They say that the question of a smart person is half an answer. While I did not find anyone who discussed the question, it does seem from the Gemara in Makos (11b) that whether or not he would have considered to have fulfilled his obligation retroactively is dependent on this argument. However, it seems that if he was already found not to be a Kohen Gadol we would not allow him to bring a Par, as he can no longer be considered to have the status of a Kohen, let alone a Kohen Gadol. [The Rambam rules (Hilchos Rotzei'ach 7:12) Batlah Kehunah, meaing that retroactively he was never the Kohen Gadol.]
