DAF DISCUSSIONS - ERUVIN 2

Mordechai Fine asked:

TOS expalins that the tsuras hapesach of the heichal was only lenoi and therefore the gemarra could not have asked that a tsuras hapesach should always be needed. If so what does the gemarra mean to ask that a tsuras hapesach should not help on more the 10 amos? If it is only for noi it seems it should not be considered at all. What chiluk is Tos trying to make? Thanks for the help!!!

Mordechai Fine, Monsey

The Kollel replies:

Tosfos means that once they built a Tzuras ha'Pesach for the Heichal's entrance, even though it was only for beauty ("Noy") it was a fully valid Tzuras ha'Pesach. It gave the entranceway the appearance of a door. Therefore, if a Tzuras ha'Pesach helps to give an entrance wider than 10 Amos the status of "entranceway" or "door," they should have gone ahead and made the entrance to the Heichal wider than 10 Amos, since the wider the entrance is the more becoming it is. Clearly, a Tzuras ha'Pesach does not help to make an entrance wider than 10 Amos into a "door."
