DAF DISCUSSIONS - ERUVIN 86

Aaron asked:

I am trying to understand Tosafot page 86 (dont remeber if Alef or Beit) that discuss if woman can or cannot blow Shofar in Rosh Hashana. Is this correct that Gzeira from Rabanan not to blow shofar in Yom Tov, and we do blow shofar in Rosh Hashana because the torah commandmant overide the Rabanan Gzeira. But the Torha does not commnad women to blow shofar, therefore, if they do ,the transgress the Derabanan prohibition (of not blowing shofar on Yom Tov)

[If I am right the prohibition is about not blowing Shabbat and Yom Tov, but the issue I want to now is not on Not blowing on Shabbat]

Thanks,

Aaron, NJ, USA

The Kollel replies:

Please note that the Tosfos in question is on Daf 96a (not 86)

I am not clear exactly what it is that you want to know.

What Tosfos actually says is that, according to the Tana'im who forbid women to perform Mitzvos Asei she'ha'Zman Gerama, the reason for the prohibition of blowing Shofar is (not because of Bal Tosif, as Rashi suggests, but) because of the general decree not to play instruments on Shabbos and Yom Tov, which the Rabanan waived on a regular Rosh Hashanah that falls on a weekday, in order not to negate the Mitzvah of Teki'as Shofar. They did not however, waive it with regard to women, who are not Chayav to perform the Mitzvah anyway.

When Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbos, they left the decree intact, since it does entail a complete nullification of the Mitzvah.

Please let me know if there is anything else you still would like to know in this regard.
