DAF DISCUSSIONS - BAVA BASRA 51

Gidon Schneider asked:

why, if a husband was on his wifes land we say 'maybe she just didn't protest for shalom bait' but when the woman is on the husband's land we do not use the same excuse? if this simply to do with men and womens 'nature'?

Gidon Schneider, Cambridge, England

The Kollel replies:

The Rashbam (49b, DH "Teima") states that her motive was that "he should not get angry at me." It would seem possible that this refers to heading off not just anger but an eventual threat of divorce. Being that the Gemara's position is that a woman has more motivation to be married than a man ("Tav l'Meisav etc.," see Kidushin 7a), it makes sense that this concerns a woman more than a man.

All the best,
