DAF DISCUSSIONS - BAVA METZIA 22

Elie asked:

Our gemara here says that most bal habtim take truemah from beinonit produce, however the rambam hilichot truemah perek 5, Halach 1, says one must give truemah from yafeh?

one thing i thought was maybe the truemah here is only drabanan but why then does Mar Zutra say rava only meant his din by a mitzvah where the master doestm't mind giving yafeh, but isn't hachnasat orchim or chavod rabbanim at least at the same level as truemah drabanan how come that is only because of "kesofa"

maybe there it is because he is emberrassed not to give best to people, but wouldn't the same appply to a truemah he is emberrased to give beinonit to a kohen?

The Kollel replies:

I think the Rambam only means to exclude fruit that are significantly inferior. If the farmer has two stocks of grapes, and one is of a higher quality than the other but both are tasty, he need not give from the best quality grapes.
