DAF DISCUSSIONS - BAVA KAMA 101

Michael asked:

It states in the Gemara that one must burn a Garment dyed with peels of an orlah fruit. I understand the prohibitions of orlah. However, are we not wasting by burning. It was already done, can't we give to a Goy or to somebody needy. I always thought Jews should not be wasting.

Michael, Highland Park, Nj

The Kollel replies:

There are many prohibitions in the Torah which the Torah tells us are forbidden from benefit, though they would seemingly benefit a Goy very much (such as a cooked mixture of milk and meat). This is because the same One Who told us that Jews should not be wasting (Ba'al Tashchis) is the same One Who tells us to throw out this garment and not have benefit from other forbidden things. The bottom line is to do the will of Hash-m.

All the best,

Yaakov Montrose
