It doesn't matter how far you are from the shul, as long as there are houses along the way within 70 Amos (approximately 105 feet) of each other (Eruvin 61b). It also doesn't matter if you are going from one city to another as long there is not a gap between the two cities of 70 Amos (see Shulchan Aruch, 398:7).
