DAF DISCUSSIONS - SHABBOS 75

Dov Lew asked:

The Oruch Hashulchan (O.C. 316,1) writes that one of the

situations in which we find the melacha of Trapping in the Mishkan is the trapping of the "Sluv" [quail]. I am very interested to know what his source is for this and more importantly, what does the "Sluv" have to do with the construction of the Mishkan? Thank you.

Sincerely,

Dov Lew

The Kollel replies:

Good question. We do not know of any use of the Slav in the Mishkan, and we could find no source for the Aruch ha'Shulchan's words.

I have no source for this, but we can always conjecture:

There are several examples of the Gemara's looking for Melachos in the Avodas haMishkan which are barely incidental to the task being performed, but necessary nevertheless - such as a tailor digging a small hole in which to hide his needle when he has to leave his position for a moment.

Would it, then, be stretching it to far to say that what the Aruch haShulchan means is that when the Mishkan workers had to eat lunch someone had to trap the food?
