DAF DISCUSSIONS - SHABBOS 64

Rafi Magid asked:

1. How we learn "CHAVALIM UMESHICHOT" (ropes and cords)FROM THE WORDS "O SAK". Just before the gemara said that we can't learn that - and gave a very good reason - it's not ARIG. The gemara dosen't regret this reason!!

2. Finally, I don't know if the words OR UBEGED - are mufne or not. I understand that both in the two places they are mufnim - did i understand the sugia??

3. In spite your answer [Answers to review Questions 64:6(c), explaining the Gemara on 64b] - generally if something is mentioned just because that other is mentioned (like here: young and old) generally it has sense. Here, i can't see the sense!!

rafi magid, givat shmuel

The Kollel replies:

1. The first Gemara is discussing Tum'as Sheretz . It concludes that Chavalim and Meshichos are not Mekabel Tumah since the Torah says "Sak" by Tum'as Sheretz, which implies that it must be woven. (The words "O Sak" do not teach that Chavalim and Meshichos are Mekabel Tum'ah, but that Kilkeli and Chavak are.) The Gemara then says even with regard to Tum'as Mes , Chavalim and Meshichos are not Mekabel Tum'ah, even though there is no word in the Pasuk which implies it must be woven. (Beged need not be woven, nor is Or woven.) The Gemara learns this from a Gezeirah Shavah, "Beged v'Or/Beged v'Or "

2. Or and Beged are indeed Mufneh in both places.

3. The Halachah of the Mishnah (that a young woman may not go out with an old woman's hair) is true, and makes sense. We are afraid she will be embarrassed and take it off. If you are asking a practical question, "Why would a young woman wear a wig made of an old woman's hair," I don't think we are short of practical situations where this can happen (e.g. she is an actor or undercover agent, her husband is old... ).
