DAF DISCUSSIONS - SHABBOS 31

Eric Solowitch asked:

Below is the translation for this posuk which you indicated shows that Simeon's children moved to Kush. I do not see it here. Please advise. P.S. this website if wonderful!!!

42. And of them, five hundred men of the children of Simeon went to Mount Seir, and Pelatiah and Neariah, and Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi at their head.

Eric Solowitch, Cleveland, Ohio United States

The Kollel replies:

Thank you for your compliments!

You seem to be correct about the verse; I am not sure why Ya'avetz cites that verse specifically, and addresses the children of Shimon. I have re-written the section, based on what you pointed out, as follows:

"The verse (Tzefanyah 3:10, see Targum) states that some of the Jewish exiles during the time of the Churban of the first Beis ha'Mikdash went to Kush (Africa). These Jews did not return with the rest of the nation when the second Beis ha'Mikdash was built. The provocateur was asking Hillel, "Why is it that the people of Africa (the Jews who did not return to Eretz Yisrael) have such flat feet," that is, why did they stay in Africa even when the Beis ha'Mikdash was rebuilt? "

Thank you again, and please accept my apologies for the delay in getting back to you. (BE"H we will get back to you in a more timely fashion if you have any further Gemara questions or thoughts about our material.)

Be well,

Mordecai Kornfeld
