DAF DISCUSSIONS - SHABBOS 108

Gershon Dubin asks:

How could the water of Yam Hamelach be curative for the eyes as in today's daf when the Gemara in Chullin says that mayim acharonim was instituted to prevent blindness caused by melach sedomis getting from one's hands to one's eyes. Is melach sedomis different than the melach in Yam Hamelach?

The Kollel replies:

Dear Gershon,

The Meiri asks your question! He suggests several answers:

1) The salt alone is very strong but when diluted with water it heals .

2) The salt heals the sick but injures someone healthy (Meiri says this is true with many remedies).

3) It can also be said that "Sdom is backwards": its salt injures but its water cures.

All the best
