DAF DISCUSSIONS - SHABBOS 56

efraim goldstein asked:

I was under impression that uria hachiti was not Jewish. If so, what sort of ishus did he have with batsheva that required a get and if he was in fact Jewish, why was he called hachiti

Once again , thank you so much for your efforts

The Kollel replies:

The Gemara in Kedushin (76b) explicitly says that not only was Uryah Jewish from birth, but he was also Meyuchas (meaning that he had a fine lineage). The Gemara there explains that Uryah earned this title because he lived near the Chiti, just as Itai ha'Giti was called this because he lived near the people of Gat. The RADAK (Shmuel Beis. 11:3) maintains that it is possible that he was a Ger Tzedek. Almost all commentaries and sources indicate that he was Jewish. This also seems to be the simple understanding of our Gemara.

I have heard that Rabbi Yisroel Reisman Shlita cited an opinion in his Navi shiur that Uryah was not Jewish. However, I am currently unable to confirm whether this was during the incident of David and Batsheva, or beforehand, in which case this opinion may be the Radak's.
