DAF DISCUSSIONS - GITIN 89

Nosson Weissman asks:

In a post about eating the shuk, https://dafyomi.co.il/kidushin/discuss/kd-qa-040.4.htm, Rabbi Dovid Bloom mentions the opinion of R' Yochanan Ben Nuri that "if one would be concerned about such possibilities, then no daughter of our patriarch Avraham would be allowed to stay married to her husband". Upon checking out the gemarah, it seems to mean that if one were to take all rumors from women "who knit down at the river" at face value, then "no daughter of our patriarch Avraham would be allowed to stay married", not necessarily about eating in the shuk or any of those activities.

The Kollel replies:

1) The Gemara (Gitin 89a) cites a Beraisa in which Rebbi Meir says that if she eats in the street, she must leave her husband. The Beraisa then cites the opinion of Rebbi Akiva that this applies only if the knitting women spread rumors. The Beraisa concludes that Rebbi Yochanan ben Nuri said "to him" that if one is concerned about such things, no daughter of Avraham will stay with her husband. According to the simple reading, this means that Rebbi Yochanan ben Nuri said this to Rebbi Akiva, so according to this you have a valid question: that Rebbi Yochanan is not referring to what Rebbi Meir said about eating in the Shuk, but only to what Rebbi Akiva said about the knitters.

2) However, if we look at the first Tosfos on 89a, we see that the first words of Tosfos are about the woman eating in the street. Tosfos does not mention explicitly about the knitting women, but then he writes that Rebbi Yochanan ben Nuri said "to him" that if you are concerned about such things then no daughter of Avraham will remain married to a Kohen. Tosfos seems to suggest that Rebbi Yochanan ben Nuri is not only replying to Rebbi Akiva, but also to Rebbi Meir who was concerned about the woman who ate in the Shuk.

3) It seems logical to me, b'Sevara, to learn that Rebbi Yochanan ben Nuri relates to both the opinions mentioned before him in the Beraisa, and I did find, bs'd, that the Shitah Mekubetzes to Kesubos 72a (on the Mishnah there, DH v'Z'L ha'Rashba) cites our Gemara in which Rebbi Meir said that if she ate in the street she must leave, and then the Shitah Mekubetzes continues and writes that Rebbi Yochanan ben Nuri said "to him" that if so, no daughter of Avraham will stay with her husband. In the text of the Shitah, Rebbi Akiva and the knitting ladies are not mentioned at all, so he said "to him" must mean that Rebbi Yochanan ben Nuri is speaking to Rebbi Meir. According to this, Rebbi Yochanan is referring to eating in the Shuk.

Reb Nasan, many thanks for showing interest in what I wrote.

All the best,

Dovid Bloom
