DAF DISCUSSIONS - KESUVOS 69

Bernard Kahan asked:

A gitten

I am greatly troubled by a Rashi I learnt tonight

On Daf 69b of Kesuvos there is a famous story with the Amora or as Rashi puts it a Shem Chochom Ilfa.It is a Hemshech of an even more famous story with him and Rav Yochonon in Taanis Daf 21a.

My main problem is Rashi D.H.OMAR KOL whenever Rashi says Kloymar he wants us to chap something that he is bothered by so we have to establish what that is but besides that more importantly Rashi tells us about Ilfa that while on his journeys to make Parnosoh "Loy Shochachti Talmudi".

Ok that sounds Beseder but just think about it would I have had a Hava Amina that while Ilfa went to find Parnosoh(no different to us today the Hamon Am)he did not learn!! Avader Nisht but Fakert HE WAS ILFA THE AMOIRA so he must have been Koyvea Itim to learn so surely Rashi should have stressed that you might have thought because Ilfa departed from the Arba Koysley Beys Hamedrash to make Parnosoh he Chas Vesholom stopped learning and was not Koyvea Itim Koh Mashma Lon No I Ilfa still know what I learnt with Rav Yochonon Why because Hoh Gufa I did not find the 2 a Stiro of "Holachti BiSchorah"and learning Torah because I can try to find Parnosoh and be Koyvea Itim to learn and still know my learning.

But no Rashi decides to tell us that Stam he did not forget his learning .Very nice Ilfa had a photographic memory !!!

I wanted Rashi to tell me something REALLY BIG AND POSITIVE!!! be like Ilfa go and pursue a Parnosoh to support yourself but remember Koyvea Itim like Ilfa and that way you wont forget your learning.

It is as if Haikar Choser Min Hasefer

Any ideas?

Kol Tuv,

The Kollel replies:

Hello Boruch. Good to hear from you!

I would suggest that we know from experience that the more one is engrossed in one's learning, the clearer one understands it and the longer one remembers it. This applies to each one on his own level. Even an Amora can be engrossed in a Sugya at varying degrees. Ilfa was saying that not only was he Kove'a Itim but that he was as engrossed in the Sugya as before. This is a great lesson to us!

Rashi says Kelomar because Ilfa did not say explicitly that he had forgotten nothing. Ilfa just said that he could find a source for any Beraisa, and Rashi explains that the meaning of this declaration was that he was still on the same level of learning that he had been previously.
