DAF DISCUSSIONS - YEVAMOS 106

Tuvya Marcus asked:

In many places in Shas Rav Pappa's wealth as a beer merchant is evident (they ate meat everyday; other citations i don't remember off hand, but there are many). From all those references, it is clear that he was the businessman, not just sitting and learning in kollel.

Perhaps his rebbe also saw that his tachlis was to become wealthy, and until he needed to provide for himself (by removing the source of his income) he wasn't reaching his own tachlis. Since the only way to make Rav Pappa go out and earn a living on his own was to remove his parents' support - either they had to become poor, or they needed to pass away. "Ani chashuv k'mes" - perhaps it was less painful for them to die than to go through the pain of poverty...
