DAF DISCUSSIONS - CHAGIGAH 12

Yitzchak Coffer asked:

This is in repect to paragraph of Insights beginning "Similarly, in Kesuvos" My question is as follows: If we praise the kallah kemos she'hi it would seem to me we are taking her midos or value as we see it now. First I wonder just what according to Bais Shemai is the correct nusach (if any) of appropriate praise. Secondly, it would seem that the two perspectives are in this instance reversed, with Bais Hillel heaping generous approbation on the Kallah suggesting that each Kallah has the potential to merit the highest praise. Thus, while I can see Poel in the other examples of ideological difference between the two Schools as relating to Bais Hillel and Potential as relating to Bais Shemai, in the case of praise accorded the Kallah I would like to better understand how the fundamental difference is upheld.

The Kollel replies:

Since she was attractive to him and he became engaged to her, the "Po'el" is how she appeared, in practice, in the eyes of her Chasan -- as a "Kalah Na'ah v'Chasudah." The "Ko'ach" refers to the natural, inherent and objective Midos Tovos that she has which would cause anyone to be attracted to her, in theory, and not just her Chasan (what actually occurred).

The Nusach, according to Beis Shamai, is that we praise her for an obvious Midah Tovah which she demonstrates, and not the general praise of "Na'ah v'Chasudah."
