DAF DISCUSSIONS - MEGILAH 9

Josh Danziger asked:

Hello. The Gemara in Megillah 9b shows that the halacha is with R' Shimon Ben Gamliel that a kosher Torah may be written in Greek. My question is, does this mean translated into Greek, or just transliterated and written with Greek letters that have the same sounds as the hebrew? Said differently, would a listener be able to tell if the Torah being read was written in Greek or Hebrew?

Thank you.

The Kollel replies:

Hello there and thanks for the interesting query. The Gemara is clearly referring to a case where the Torah was translated into Greek as was the case with Ptolemy. It would seem from the conclusion of the Gemara that the same rule applies to Greek characters.

All the best,

Y. Landy
