DAF DISCUSSIONS - MEGILAH 24

allen schuldenfrei asked:

If I recall the mishnah in yuma, the kohen gadol read parshas pinchas by heart and did not roll the sefer torah from achrei mos to pinchas. If this is the case, then what is the gemara's proof that one can skip even in a torah?

Also, according to the gemara's answer, one is allowed to skip even in the torah so long that the translator hasn't finished translating. If so, how does the kohen gadol skip on yom kippur from achrei mos to pinchas since the translator will have finished translating long before they rolled to pinchas, since the translator can only translate 1 passuk at a time?

The Kollel replies:

1. You are thinking of a third Parsha called "u'be'Esor", not the one mentioned here "Ach b'Esor" that is in Parshas Emor (see Yoma 7:1).

2. The Kohen Gadol read "ube'Esor" from Pinchas by heart (see the Mishnah ibid.) . There was therefore no skipping from Vayikra to Bamidbar.

All the best,

Yaakov Montrose
