DAF DISCUSSIONS - MEGILAH 18

Aaron Gal asked:

I am trying to undersrand the words seirusin , seirusin, and lemafrea.. As I am fluent Hebrew speaker, I know what the words are in modern Hebrew, but I read that if Rabotenu in the Gemara were not sure what the word Le-Seirugin is.

Seems to me that what the Mishna expalains as Le-Mafrea, is explained as Seirusin in the Gemara. I do not know if:

1. Is Mafrea=LeSeirusin?

2. Is Seirugin delays between the Keriot? let's say one read pasuk Alef, them pause (and may be do something else) and then read pasuk Beith, then stops again , and after delay paskul Gimel, etc, or one read Pasuk Alef, them Pasuk Gimel, then pasuk He'e, then Pasuk Zayin (1, 3, 5, 7, etc)?

Sierusin according to Even Shoshan dictionary will ne 3,1,5,9,7 while seirugin is 1,3,5,7,9.

My question is, is that so? or Seirugin is 1, [delay], 2, [delay], 3, [delay[, 4, [delay]

The Kollel replies:

1. Yes, le'Mafre'a and Serusin are identical. This is stated clearly by RASHI 18b DH SERUSIN. See MISHNEH BERURAH 690:21 who writes that this means one read the later Pesukim before the earlier Pesukim. Even if one verse is out of line the reading is invalid.

2. Yes, Serugin means delays between the Keri'os. This is stated by SHULCHAN ARUCH OC 690:5, that one stopped and waited and then returned to the place where one stopped. One is Yotzei because one read the entire Megilah in order.

You mentioned that one may have even done something else in the meantime. This is in fact stated by REMA 690:5 that b'Di'eved one fulfilled the obligation of Megilah even if one talked in the middle, but if someone does so one should reproach him for speaking.

1,3,5,7 is not Serugin and is an invalid reading of the Megilah. The reason is that one did not read the entire Megilah. Even if one omitted one word of the Megilah this means one missed the Mitzvah entirely (see MISHNAH BERURAH 690:5). Even if one would later fill it in by reading 2,4,6,8... this is no good because it is considered l'Mafre'a i.e. one did not read the Megilah in the correct order.

Therefore Serugin, which is valid, is exclusively 1[delay], 2[delay], 3[delay], 4[delay],.....
