DAF DISCUSSIONS - BERACHOS 5

baruch wolf asked:

The phrase "al tikrei selomdenu elah selomdeinu" is part of R" Yochanan's resolution (eilu v'eilu). What does the "al tikrei" add to the answer (he learns vs. we learn)?

baruch wolf, baltimore, MD, USA

The Kollel replies:

The Pasuk reads, "Ashrei Ish Asher Teyasrenu Kah, umi'Torascha Selamdenu." The previous opinion was that Yisurin Shel Ahavah are only when there is no Bitul Torah involved; this is learned from the words, "umi'Torascha Selamdenu," which relate to the one to whom Hash-m is giving the Yisurim, and yet "He still teaches him Torah." Rebbi Yochanan does not relate the end of the verse to the person who is getting the Yisurim, but rather he relates it to the rest of us, who "learn this lesson from the Torah" -- "mi'Torascha Selamdenu" -- "from Your Torah You teach it to us."
