DAF DISCUSSIONS - BERACHOS 11

Paul Albert asks:

Per Koren Talmud Bavli Berakhot English Version, page 70 states "Although Rabbi Tarfon was a disciple of Beit Hillel......

My research states that he was a disciple of Beit Shammai. Which is correct? Source?

The Kollel replies:

The Seder ha'Doros cites Rashi in the first Perek of Yevamos (15a DH Rebbi Tarfon) who writes that Rebbi Tarfon was from the Talmidim of Shamai.

He cites support for this from the Mishnah in the first Perek of Berachos (10b) where Rebbi Tarfon deliberately lay down while reading the evening Keri'as Shema in accordance with the opinion of Beis Shamai. As Tosfos writes in Yevamos 14a (DH Lo), this implies that he was from the Talmidim of Beis Shamai.
