DAF DISCUSSIONS - BERACHOS 10

Yehuda Hamer asked:

Question: The gemarah lists 3 things that chizkiahu did which were not approved by the sages. The asterik in the gemarah also refers to the gemarah in pesachim.

However the deeds that were not approved are not written in the same order.why?

My answer is, only the deed of making another pesach sheini is written last, because the posuk says that chizkiahu asked for forgiveness, that's y this deed is listed on the bottom. with us also, if we do something wrong and ask for for forgiveness, we should list it on the bottom of our past negative deeds.

that is my answer, what is yours, and y r the other ones not in order?

The Kollel replies:

Your answer still does not address why "he removed the doors of the Heichal" is placed before "he stopped up the waters of Gichon" in Pesachim, and after it in Berachos (in both places, "he was Me'aber Nisan" is written third). Also, it seems that he asked for forgiveness for everything improper that he did, and not just for being Me'aber Nisan, for the Gemara says that if a Talmid Chacham sinned at night, do not incriminate him during the next day, for he certainly did Teshuvah (Berachos 19a).

My question, though, is why you did not ask from the change of the text in the beginning of the Beraisa. In Berachos, it says first that "he hid away the Book of Refu'os," and third it says that "he dragged the bones of his father." In Pesachim, though, it puts "he dragged the bones..." first and "he hid away the Book of Refu'os" third ! (See the MAR'EH ESH who points out this discrepancy.)

However, I found that the "Shinuy Girsa'os" printed in the Mishnayos in Pesachim quotes the Girsa of the Cambridge manuscript which has the Girsa in Pesachim the same as the Girsa in Berachos. From there it seems that we cannot make any Diyukim in the change of the Girsa.

Nonetheless, if there is any Diyuk to make, it seems as follows. The order in the Gemara is expressing the things that Chizkiyahu did in the manner of "Lo Zu Af Zu" -- "not only this, but even this," teaching ascending levels of Chidush, from a Chet that seems light to a Chet that seems severe. As such, in Berachos the Gemara expresses them based on the increasing severity of the Chet between man and Hash-m (Bein Adam la'Makom), in order to place the hiding of the Sefer Refu'os as the first one on the list, since that it was the Sugya in Berachos was discussing. Therefore, it mentions that he dragged his father's bones only at the end of the list, because the disgrace done to a dead person is certainly more severe than hiding the Sefer Refu'os (which, at worst, was an indirect cause of harm). Similarly, the closing of the waters of Gichon are mentioned before the cutting off of the doors of the Heichal, because certainly the latter act was worst, since it involved disgracing the Kedushah of the Heichal.

In contrast, the Gemara in Pesachim mentions Chizkiyahu's acts in order of the severity between man and his fellow man (Bein Adam la'Chaveiro). Therefore, the hiding of the Sefer Refu'os is mentioned last, since that was most severe in that it caused harm to many people, for all ensuing generations. The closing of the waters of Gichon is mentioned second, because it, too, was quite severe, in that it caused many people to be without water. The cutting off the doors of the Heichal, though, is mentioned first, because there was no damage done to other people by that act.

(Both Gemaras mentioned his act of being Me'aber Nisan last because it is the worst sin of Bein Adam la'Makom, since it would have caused the people to sin to Hash-m by not bringing the Korban Pesach in its proper time (see Rashi), and it was also the worst sin of Bein Adam la'Chaveiro, in that it caused many Jews to sin.
