As I am sure you know, this is the topic of a very difficult Tosfos. Your specific question is asked by the Tiferes Yakov who does not answer it. However, since the Pashtus is that Rashbam follows Rabeinu Efraim, it may be that Rabeinu Efraim does not agree with the idea of Sofo l'Hispashet; see abovementioned Tosfos.
