DAF DISCUSSIONS - SANHEDRIN 72

Shaul Grantz asked:

'The Torah says: "If someone seeks to kill you,you should kill him"'. What is the Biblical source (chapter and verse)for this?.

Shaul Grantz, Jerusalem, Israel

The Kollel replies:

The words "v'ha'Torah Amrah" in this Gemara mean "The Torah *is saying here*." That is, the verse of Machteres that the Gemara is discusing, is the source for killing a person who wants to kill you. This is the intention of Rashi here. (See also Rashi Berachos 58a, Bava Kama 117b.
