My notes say that there is no disqualifying effect until the greater part of the trachea is torn? If only 20% is torn, why isn't pausing a disqualifying effect?

Your notes, as you write them, seem to be saying the opposite of what is true. If you could give me an exact quotation or reference, I would be able to address your question better. (In the case of the Shechitah of a bird, where only one Siman is required, after he has slaughtered the greater part it is no longer disqualified.)
