DAF DISCUSSIONS - CHULIN 12

Mark May asks:

Dear Rabbi,

Please provide basis for R. Nassan's ruling (Chullin Daf 12b 1-2)

R. Nassan, as I understand the Gemora's discussion, posits that intent is not required by shochit when slaughtering for Chullin while intent is required according to the sages.

The law follows R Nassan.

Thank you

The Kollel replies:

Rebbi Nasan indeed maintains that Shechitah does not require intent to be kosher. This does not mean that it is an ideal Shechitah, as there is a requirement to have intent for the Mitzvah, but in terms of the Shechitah it is kosher. Rabeinu Yehonasan of Lunil (in his commentary to the Rif) explains that this is derived from the Torah's expression, "You shall slaughter," and not "you shall cut," implying that any slaughter -- even without intending to cut -- is valid. He also notes that the requirement for Ratzon in Kodshim ("You shall slaughter willfully," Vayikra 22:29) implies that for Chulin there is no such need and Ratzon means intent.
