Though I have not found an explicit answer, it could be that the answer is alluded to by the Gemara itself when it says that Yehudah was "Meturgamanei d'Reish Lakish." Reish Lakish was physically very powerful (even after he became a Talmid Chacham), and might have also been too much of a well known personality to take away his known Meturgaman.
