What is the meaning of "Yonasi b'Chagvei ha'Sela"?

1.

Rashi, from a Midrash: This refers to when Pharaoh chased after Yisrael and reached them camped at the sea. They could not flee forward, due to the sea, and not to the sides, due to vicious Chayos. There were like a dove that fled from a hawk, and entered a crevice 1 in a rock. A snake was hissing at her. If she will enter further - there is a snake! If she will go outside - there is a hawk! Hashem told her, show me your appearance, your good actions - to whom do you turn at a time of affliction?!

2.

Malbim (Melitzah): This Dibur [of Hashem to Shlomo] was not absolute Nevu'ah, just a prophetic arousal. The Nefesh did not totally leave the body. The verse depicts a dove hiding in a crevice in a rock. It remained dressed in its body. He told Shlomo "the Bayis that you will build - if you will go in My laws

1

Rashi: Chagvei is an expression of breakage, like "Yachugu v'Yanu'u" (Tehilim 107:27), "v'Haysah Admas Yehudah l'Mitzrayim l'Chaga" (Yeshayah 19:17). The plural is Chagvei, just like the plural of Ketzeh is Katzvei, and "va'Yichros Es Madveihem" (Shmuel II, 10:4).

2

What is the source that Hashem put on him Yir'as Hashem? 'Everything is bi'Ydei Shamayim, except for Yir'as Shamayim' (Brachos 33b)! (PF)

3

Malbim: Investigative and practical intellect need each other - 'if there is no fear, there is no Chachmah; if there is no Chachmah, there is no fear' (Avos 3:17). Chachmah precedes fear - it is the cause, for an ignoramus cannot be a Chasid (ibid., 2:5). One must put first in his investigative intellect to know Whom he fears, and the laws that a man will do and live in them. Fear precedes Chachmah like the purpose precedes the means. The purpose of Chachmah is Teshuvah and good deeds (Brachos 17a).

2)

What is "Seser Madregah"?

1.

Rashi: It is a hole in tiers of earth that are like steps; it is common to make them around towers.

3)

Why does he say "Har'eini Es Mar'ayich"?

1.

Rashi: Refer to 2:14:1:1.

2.

Seforno: Is there a Mar'eh (teacher) who shows to you the way to tree of life?

3.

Malbim (Melitzah): The appearance of the Nefesh is investigative intellect, and its voice is practical intellect. The appearance shows the matter itself. The Nefesh is intellect - it is called 'Nefesh ha'Sichli'is.' Via investigation, it shows its ability to distinguish between Emes and Sheker. Show to Me your appearance via investigative intellect that I already put on you in the first Dibur.

4)

Why does he say "Hashmi'eini Es Kolech"?

1.

Seforno: Does anyone truly pray for the Ge'ulah?

2.

Malbim (Melitzah): The Nefesh's voice is practical intellect. The appearance shows the matter itself. It judges matters as they are proper to be - what to do and what not to do, in order to distinguish between good and evil. Via this voice it makes all bodily powers hear, to command them about good and evil, Mitzvah and Aveirah. Via voice, one reveals his desire. Make Me hear your voice via commanding your bodily powers to guard Hashem's Mitzvos via practical intellect, like I commanded you in this Dibur.

5)

What do we learn from "Ki Kolech Arev [u'Mar'eich Navah]"?

1.

Torah Temimah citing Brachos 24a: A woman's [singing] voice is Ervah.

2.

Torah Temimah citing Kesuvos 75a: A deep voice is a Mum in a woman.

3.

Torah Temimah citing Nidah 31b: A woman's voice is pleasant based on her creation (she was created from bone, which makes noise when one strikes it. Man was created from earth, which does not make noise.)

4.

Seforno: Then, in Shibud Mitzrayim, your voice was pleasant to me in Tefilah, and Mar'eich, the one who taught to do Tzedakah, was nice and proper - Aharon, Moshe and others like them.

5.

Malbim (Melitzah): The verse puts "Har'eini Es Mar'ayich" first, for it came earlier (via the first Dibur). Here, "Ki Kolech Arev" is first, for it represents Yir'as Hashem, which is more important than Chachmah (Mar'eich); fear is the purpose.
