To whom would Pharaoh say "Nevuchim heim ba'Aretz"?
What does "Nevuchim heim ba'Aretz" mean?
Rashi: They are locked in (entangled) 1 (and do not know how to escape).
Rashbam: It is the acronym of 'Nivchei Yam' - implying that the hidden depths of the sea prevented them from fleeing forwards. 2
To whom would Pharaoh be referring when he would say "Sagar aleihem ha'Midbar"?
Seforno and Targum Yonasan: He would say this with reference to Ba'al Tz'fon, who had locked them in the desert (and they could not escape).
Rashbam and Targum Onkelos: He would say that the desert had enclosed them. 1
They were unable to flee back (the way they had come), due to the snakes, serpents, scorpions and wild beasts that abound in the desert (Rashbam).
