Malbim: Zimah is deep thoughts in Zenus, i.e. heresy and clinging to idolatry. From then, idolatry was Batel 1 .

His words connote that it was totally Batel, even from Nochrim. Hashem eradicated the Yetzer for idolatry at the beginning of Bayis Sheni (Sanhedrin 64a). The verse implies that Hashem will cease it from Yisrael; this was from the time of the Churban (refer to 23:27:1:1). (PF)
