Why did Shechem's father, Chamor, go out to speak to Yaakov?

Seforno: When he saw that Yaakov did not react, he was afraid 1 that he was planning to avenge Dinah. 2

Malbim (to 34:8): The law of the land was that strangers may not marry with residents. Chamor was the ruler. He could change this.

What is difficult? His son asked him to arrange to marry her! Perhaps normally, the leader invites people to come to speak to him. Seforno answers why he went to speak to Yaakov. - PF

Why does the Torah put this verse between mentioning that Bnei Yaakov were in the field, and when they came?

Ha'amek Davar: It teaches that when they came, Chamor was talking softly to Yaakov, therefore they did not show anger. This was Hashgachah, so the episode should end like it did.
