The smell of goat's skins is particularly repugnant - so how could Yitzchak describe the aroma that accompanied Ya'akov "like a field that Hashem blessed"?

1.

Rashi: In fact with Ya'akov there entered the smell of Gan Eden 1 - which is equivalent to that of an apple-orchard.

2.

Targum Yonasan: Esav's clothes now adopted the smell of the Ketores which will later be brought in the Beis-ha'Mikdash (which is called 'a field blessed by Hashem, and) in which the Shechinah will rest.

3.

Rashbam: Esav's garments were spiced (though it is not clear who spiced them) - , like a field that is full of 'Nerd, Karkom, Kaneh and Kinmon' (four of the basic spices used in the Ketores).

4.

We read Begadav like Bogdav. Even Resha'im from Yakov will do Teshuvah (Bereishis Rabsi Toldos p.109). 2

1

Sifsei Chachamim - Esav's special garments were from Nimrod, and initially, of Adam ha'Rishon. See also Ba'al ha'Turim.

2

Michtav me'Eliyahu (5 p.444) - when they hear Emes (if sinners prosper, all the more so Tzadikim! If Tzadikim are punished, all the more so sinners will be), they repent. One who is not at the level just has a difficulty, Tzadik v'Ra Lo, Rasha v'Tov Lo.

2)

Why did Yitzchak mention 'a field here?

1.

Ramban: He was actually blessing Esav that with success in all his hunting endeavors in the field", 1 and that no harm should befall him there.

2.

Seforno: Refer to 27:28:1:1.

1

He was termed 'Ish Sadeh' - at the beginning of the Parshah.

3)

What is the significance of the beautiful aroma and of the field ... ?

1.

Seforno: To increase Yitzchak's desire to bless Ya'akov with the unique pleasure of a pleasant aroma. 1 Like a field, which, over and above the nutrition that it provides for people or animals, Hashem added a beautiful aroma which adds spiritual pleasure 2 to all - This is from the ways of Hashem's Goodness.

1

As Chazal have said (in Berachos, 31b) 'What is it that the Neshamah derives pleasure from it but not the body? A pleasant aroma'.

2

Note the connection between 'Re'ach' and 'Ru'ach'.

4)
