GIFTS AFTER BETROTHAL (Yerushalmi Halachah 5 Daf 28b)

(a)

(Mishnah): If a groom sends gifts (for his betrothed wife) to his father-in-law's house - if he sent 100 mana (10000 zuz) and ate his betrothal meal there, even if he only ate food to the value of a dinar (1 zuz), he cannot reclaim the money (if the nisuin is never carried out).

(b)

If he did not eat the meal there, he can reclaim the money.

(c)

If he sent large gifts with intent that she bring them with her to his house, he can reclaim them.

(d)

If he sent small gifts that are only enough for use in her father's house, he cannot reclaim them.

(e)

(Gemara): A person once sent his betrothed wife large gifts (and wanted to go and partake of the betrothal meal)...

1.

His relatives advised him not to eat from the meal. He went and ate anyway and the house fell down and he died and his betrothed wife's family acquired everything that he had sent.

(f)

There was another story of a person who sent his betrothed wife 24 large boxes of lettuce (and other fruits and vegetables) between Pesach and Shavuos. The Rabbanan only wondered how he had managed to have flax seeds and new olives at this time.

(g)

R. Praida honored R. Yehuda HaNasi (a.k.a. Rebbi) by giving him two types of radish between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur in the year following the Shemita year. He gave so much that it needed to be loaded onto a camel to move it.

1.

Rebbi to R. Praida: Aren't these prohibited since they are Sefichin (aftergrowths) of Shemita?

2.

R. Praida to Rebbi: They were planted after Shemita (and grew very quickly).

3.

At that time, Rebbi permitted buying vegetables immediately after Shemita (without concern that they grew in Shemita).
