It is compared to the pain of a woman in labor because it will be fraught with suffering of the worst sort, never experienced before by the Jewish people. Just as a woman who is about to give birth may feel that her end is approaching, so too will the Jewish people not know whether they will survive that time of tribulation. However, just as a woman who withstands the pain of labor merits to experience the birth of her child, so too will the Jewish people - who endure the suffering and remain true to the Almighty - merit to experience the coming of Mashi'ach.

12)[line 37]ממלחמת גוג ומגוגMILCHEMES GOG U'MAGOG

Magog is first mentioned among the sons of Yefes, son of Noach, in Bereishis 10:2. The prophet Yechezkel (chapters 38-39) describes a cataclysmic war lead by Gog of the land of Magog, where many nations combine forces to wage war against the land of Yisrael. The prophecy assures Gog that HaSh-m Himself will ruin the war effort and will destroy all of his multitudes. It is traditionally assumed that this war will take place at the end of days, preceding the revelation of HaSh-m as Master of His world.

13)[line 40]"יום עברה היום ההוא""YOM EVRAH HA'YOM HA'HU"- "That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of ruin and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness." (Tzefanyah 1:15) - Although the prophet is describing the punishment that HaSh-m will mete upon the inhabitants of Yerushalayim who continue in their wicked ways and fail to do Teshuvah, the Gemara finds a hint in this verse to the punishment that sinners will receive in Gehinom.
