CHAMETZ MIXTURES (Cont'd) (Yerushalmi Halachah 1 Daf 19b)

(a)

(The Mishnah stated): R. Eliezer includes ladies' cosmetics. One text has the word "tachshitei'' (fine flour applied to the face to improve the complexion) and another has the word "tipulei'' (fine flour applied to remove the hair of girls). The text that has "tipulei'' would certainly prohibit "tachshitei); but the text that has "tachshitei'' would not prohibit "tipulei'' (as it is particularly disgusting).

(b)

(Beraisa): The Pasuk states (Shemos 12,20), "You shall not eat any (machmetzes) leaven'' - this includes Babylonian Kutach, Madian beer and Edomian vinegar within the prohibition. I might think that they would be punishable with Kares, the Pasuk then states, "...as whoever eats Chametz will be cut off (Kares)'' (the Pasuk did not use the word machmetzes).

(c)

Question (Chevraya to R. Yona): Here (about the Lav) is written "kol'' - "all'' and here (about Kares) is written "kol'' - but here you include [mixtures in the prohibition] and here you exclude [mixtures from the punishment of Kares]?!

(d)

Answer: Both are inclusions - here (Kares) includes those that eat (i.e. even women) and here (the Lav) includes that which is eaten (even mixtures).

(e)

Question (Beraisa): One can fulfill his obligation with flavored matzah, even if it does not taste of grain; as long as the majority is grain. These food items have a majority of Chametz and one should therefore by liable for eating them?!

(f)

Answer: The Pasuk about matzah states "lechem'' - "bread'' and these items are not bread.

(g)

Question (R. Yosa - Beraisa): The Torah is only particular about "lechem'' when referring to matzah, as the Pasuk states (Devarim 16,3), "...Seven days you shall eat upon it matzos, bread of poverty''. But here, how can you learn Chametz from matzah?

(h)

Another proof (Beraisa): (That we do not learn Chametz from matzah) One may fulfill is obligation with a soaked wafer or a boiled wafer as long as it did not dissolve. We can infer that if it did dissolve, it could not be used. However, concerning Chametz it is taught that if one dissolved Chametz and then swallowed it he would be liable?!

(i)

Question: If so, why is one who eats an item that contains a majority of Chametz not punishable with Kares?

(j)

Answer (R. Yosa quoting R. Idi): It is not absolute Chametz.
