PUTTING FLOUR INTO CHAROSES OR MUSTARD (Yerushalmi Halachah 7 Daf 18b)

(a)

One may not put flour into charoses nor into mustard.

(b)

If he did, he should eat it immediately.

(c)

R' Meir says, one may not cook the Pesach offering in liquids or fruit juice, but one may smear them or dip into them.

(d)

A baker's water (used for cooling his hands) should be spilled out as it becomes Chametz.

(e)

(Beraisa): One may not put flour into charoses nor into mustard.

1.

If he did, he should eat it immediately, as long as he does not delay.

2.

R' Meir prohibits it, since he delays. (Mustard is difficult to eat quickly due to its sharpness).

3.

The verse states (Shemos 12, 9), "Uvashel mevushal ba'mayim''-''and cooked in water'' - this only includes water; what is the source for prohibiting cooking in other liquids? "Uvashel mevushal'' - this includes any way of cooking.

(f)

Question: This inclusion follows R' Akiva (who expounds double wordings in the Torah), but according to R' Yishmael (who does not, what is the source for this law)?

(g)

Answer (Beraisa-R' Yishmael): It is a Kal Vechomer - If water, that does not weaken the taste [of the matza] is prohibited, other liquids that weaken the taste should certainly be prohibited!

(h)

(Beraisa): One may not knead matza with liquids, but one may smear the (finished) dough with them. Said R' Akiva, I was with R' Eliezer and R' Yehoshua on a boat and I kneaded their matzos with liquids. One may not knead matzah with boiling water as they are Cholet (prevent it from becoming Chametz - the Torah requires guarding the matzos from becoming Chametz - if this is anyway impossible, the matzos do not qualify for use on the night of Pesach); nor may one knead with lukewarm water as it speeds up the leavening; rather one kneads with cold water.

(i)

Question (Beraisa): All menachos (meal-offerings) are kneaded with lukewarm water and guarded from becoming Chametz.

(j)

Answer (R' Ami quoting R''SBL): There, it is done by the Kohanim who are zealous (and prevent them from becoming Chametz); here it is done by women who are sluggish.

(k)

Question: Rather, may the Kohanim themselves knead their matzos with lukewarm water?

(l)

Answer: Like the Beraisa of R' Zecharia - A Nidah must shampoo and comb [to be permitted to her husband] and a Kohen's wife need not [in order to eat Terumah- since she regularly immerses, she is careful]. But a Kohen's wife who is a Nidah must shampoo and comb in order to keep all Nidos alike. Similarly, even Kohanim should not knead with lukewarm water in order to keep all matzos alike.

(m)

(The Mishnah stated): A baker's water (used for cooling his hands) should be spilled out as it becomes Chametz.

(n)

Beraisa #1: He should spill it out in a place with cracks (where the water will collect).

(o)

Beraisa #2: He should spill it out on a slope.

(p)

Answer (R' Yosa): Beraisa #1 refers to an elevated place (where the water will not collect in the cracks); Beraisa #2 refers to a large slope (that as the water flows down, it will be absorbed into the ground and not become Chametz).

(q)

(R' Pinchas quoting R' Ila quoting R' Chiya bar Ba): One who soaked wheat or barley in water, if they became Chametz, they are prohibited; if not, they are permitted.

(r)

(R' Yosa): One who soaked barley in water, if they split open, they are prohibited; if soaked in vinegar, they are permitted as the vinegar shrinks them (and prevents them from becoming Chametz).

(s)

R' Shmuel bar Rav Yitzchak had souring wine. He put barley into it to cause it to become vinegar. He inquired about them to R' Imi and R' Imi said that he needed to destroy it.

(t)

R' Chanina had honey mixed with fine flour. He inquired about them to R' Mana and R' Mana said that he needed to destroy it.

(u)

One of the people of the house of R' Kirai had barrels of oil in a storehouse of wheat. He inquired of the Rabanan and they told him to go and sweep away the wheat that was underneath the barrels (as drops of oil from the barrels had dripped onto them and turned them into Chametz).

(v)

R' Imi instructed about barrels that contained Kutach (throughout the year and had breadcrumbs in them) that they should fill them with water for three full days (in order to permit them to be used on Pesach).
