BAKING MATZOS WITH OTHER LIQUIDS (Yerushalmi Perek 2 Halachah 4 Daf 17b)

(a)

(R' Simon quoting R''YBL): The kzayis of matzah eaten on the night of Pesach may not contain any other liquids (other than water).

(b)

R' Yirmiyah and Rebbi said that this is merely a mitzvah (ideally); R' Yehudah ben Pazi said that it is essential.

(c)

From the following statement of R' Bun bar Chiya, it is clear that he said that it is essential -

(d)

Question (R' Bun bar Chiya): Surely our Mishnah prohibited using Challos Todah (from the verse "seven days'' - can they be made (see 2(a) earlier). Why is this verse needed if the Torah requires oil to be used for Challos Todah, thereby disqualifying them from use as matzah)?

(e)

Answer: There, a revi'is of oil was divided amongst the 20 loaves which is not enough for the dough to be considered "enriched'' with other juices.

(f)

Question: What is the source that one could fulfill his obligation with "enriched'' matzah?

(g)

(Beraisa): I might say that one can fulfill his obligation with Revucha (Challos fried in a pan - they contain a large quantity of oil)? (Shemos 12, 17), "And you shall guard the matzos'' - refers to matzah that needs to be guarded from becoming leavened, unlike Revucha that anyway will not become leavened.

(h)

Proof: This implies that if it would need to be guarded, one could use it for matzah (even though it contains a large quantity of oil)?!

(i)

Support (Beraisa): 'One can fulfill his obligation with flavored matzah, even if it does not have the taste of grain, as long as the majority is grain' - the assumption is that it was flavored with juices.

(j)

Rejection: Let us instead suggest that it was flavored with sesame or nuts.

(k)

Question: What is the source that one can fulfill his obligation with flavored matzah?

(l)

Answer (Beraisa): I might say that one can only fulfill his obligation using black bread (as it would fulfill the verse's description of 'Lechem Oni' - poor man's bread). From where do I know that even King Shlomo's (Royal - fine flour) matzah can be used? (Shemos 12, 18), "...You shall eat matzos'' - this is an inclusion. If so, what is the understanding of the phrase "Lechem Oni''? This excludes scolded bread, fried dough and a large bun.

(m)

One can fulfill his obligation with matzah up to the thickness of a tefach (handsbreath) like the Lechem HaPanim (Showbread).

(n)

One can fulfill his obligation with matzah that is not fully baked, as long as if one would snap it open, there would not be 'veins' running along it.

(o)

"Old'' matzah is a dispute between Beis Shammai and Beis Hillel. R' Yosa (disagreed and) said that all agree that if it was not baked with Pesach in mind, it is certain that he will not be careful to prevent it from becoming Chametz.

(p)

One can fulfill his obligation with thin matzos whether with or without designs, even though they said that ideally one may not bake thin matzos with a design on Pesach.

(q)

Beraisa (R' Yehudah): Beitus ben Zunin asked Raban Gamliel and the Chachamim in Yavneh -

1.

May one make bake thin matzos with a design?

2.

(They replied) No, as the lady will delay in making them and they will become Chametz.

3.

(Beitus) If so, why not make them using a mould, which will avoid any delay.

4.

(They replied) People will say that all thin matzos with a design are prohibited and Beitus's are permitted?!

(r)

Beraisa (R' Yosa): One may make designs on very thin matzos like wafers, but one may not make designs on buns.
