SUMMARY

1. Rabanan: If a person buys an animal that is nursing a baby, the next, first offspring of the mother might have the status of a firstborn animal.

2. Rebbi Yochanan: If a sheep is always followed around by a baby pig, the sheep's future offspring is exempt from the Halachos of a firstborn animal. One may not eat the pig until Eliyahu ha'Navi comes and tells us that it is permitted (i.e. that it was born from the sheep).

3. The Halachah always follows Raban Shimon ben Gamliel except in three cases.

4. Rebbi Yosi ben ha'Meshulam: One is allowed to tear the hair of a firstborn animal if he either needs to slaughter it or to show the Kohen a possible blemish on the animal.

5. On Yom Tov, one may move aside the wool of an animal when he wants to slaughter it.

A BIT MORE

1. The Rabanan maintain that it is possible that an animal treats the young of another animal as its own, even though it did not give birth to that animal.

2. The novelty of Rebbi Yochanan's law is that it is possible that a sheep would treat even a baby animal that does not resemble it at all as its young, even though it did not give birth to this animal.

3. Accordingly, it is clear that Rebbi Yochanan is stating his Halachah in accordance with the opinion of Raban Shimon ben Gamliel and not according to the Rabanan.

4. This is permitted as long as he does not tear off the wool entirely, but rather lets it hang between the rest of the sheep's wool. In this manner, his act does not give the appearance that he is shearing Kodshim.

5. Some opinions understand that he does not have to worry that he might tear the wool off of the animal, since this would be an unintentional act of shearing (and it is possible that it will not happen altogether). Rav agrees with this law, but for a different reason (see 25a).
