SUMMARY

1. If there are two adjacent blisters on the lung of an animal, the animal is a Tereifah. If it is only one blister that appears like two, it must be checked to determine whether the animal is a Tereifah.

2. An animal's lung has three lobes on the right side and two on the left side. If the number of lobes is reversed, or if one is missing, the animal is a Tereifah.

3. Rava maintains that if there is an extra lobe on the lung of an animal, the animal is a Tereifah. Mereimar disagrees.

4. Rafram maintains that if the lung of an animal is like a piece of wood, the animal is a Tereifah.

5. Rava maintains that if the lung of an animal is blue, green, or red, the animal is not a Tereifah, but if it is black like dried ink, the animal is a Tereifah.

6. If the lung of an animal is partially clogged, it must be sliced open and examined. If it is filled with pus, the animal is not a Tereifah. If it is not filled with pus, a feather, spit, or straw must be placed on the cut, and if it moves, then the animal is not a Tereifah.

7. If a sound is emitted from the lung of an animal when inflated, it indicates a puncture. One must examine it to determine whether it is a Tereifah.

8. If the inside of a lung is liquefied so that it spills back and forth inside the lung, the animal is not a Tereifah.

9. If a lung of an animal is punctured, the animal is a Tereifah, according to the Rabanan. Rebbi Shimon maintains that it is a Tereifah only when is punctured through to the bronchi.

A BIT MORE

1. If there are two blisters next to each other, it is an indication that the lung was punctured there. If it is one blister that looks like two, it must be checked by puncturing the blister on one side. If the pus runs from one apparent blister to the other, it is only one blister and the animal is not a Tereifah.

2. When the underside of the animal faces a person when it is hung from its hind legs, it has three lobes on its lung on the right side and two on the left. If the locations of the lobes are reversed, with three on the left and two on the right, or if it is missing a lobe, the animal is a Tereifah.

3. According to Rava, an extra lobe is the same as missing a lobe, and the animal is a Tereifah. However, according to Mereimar, if there is an extra lobe in the same row as the other lobes, it is not a Tereifah.

4. According to one opinion, if the lung has a white appearance like wood, the animal is a Tereifah. According to another opinion, if the lung has a hard texture like wood, the animal is a Tereifah. A third opinion says that if it is perfectly smooth like a piece of wood, the animal is a Tereifah.

5. If the lung is black the animal is a Tereifah, because a blackened lung was originally red before it turned black, which indicates that it was stricken with disease. If it remained red and did not turn black, it eventually will heal and thus the animal is not a Tereifah.

6. If the lung is filled with pus, the animal is not a Tereifah, because it is clogged from the pus and not as a result of being stricken with disease. If it is not filled with pus, a feather, spit or straw must be placed where the lung was sliced open. If the feather, spit, or straw moves, that indicates that the air is getting through the clogged area and it is not a Tereifah.

7. He should place a feather, spit, or straw on the area of the lung which is emitting a sound. If the object moves, that indicates that both the outer and inner membrane are punctured, and the animal is a Tereifah. If it does not move, that indicates that the sound is a result of the inner membrane being punctured but not the outer membrane, and the animal is not a Tereifah.

8. However, if the bronchi are also liquefied, the animal is a Tereifah.

9. However, Rebbi Shimon agrees that if it is deficient as a result of the puncture, even if the puncture does not reach the bronchi, the animal is a Tereifah.
