CHULIN 31-43 - Two weeks of study material have been dedicated by Mrs. Estanne Abraham Fawer to honor the Yahrzeit of her father, Rav Mordechai ben Eliezer Zvi (Rabbi Morton Weiner) Z'L, who passed away on 18 Teves 5760. May the merit of supporting and advancing Dafyomi study -- which was so important to him -- during the weeks of his Yahrzeit serve as an Iluy for his Neshamah.

SUMMARY

1. Own who slaughters a Chayah or a bird must place loose earth underneath and above the blood.

2. The Shechitah of an animal done in only one stroke is valid if the knife is double the width of the neck of the animal.

3. If the Shechitah of an animal is done in more than one stroke, even a knife with a minuscule blade or a scalpel may be used for the Shechitah.

4. If one throws a knife at a wall and it inadvertently slaughters an animal along the way, it is a valid Shechitah, according to Rebbi Nasan. The Chachamim disagree.

5. If a Katan, deaf-mute, or an insane person slaughters an animal, the Shechitah is valid, provided that an adult is supervising.

6. If a Nidah immerses accidentally, she becomes Tehorah for her husband but remains Teme'ah for Terumah, according to Rav Nachman. Rebbi Yochanan maintains that she is also Teme'ah to her husband.

7. If a wave containing forty Se'ah of water detaches from the sea and crashes onto Tamei utensils or people on the shore, they become Tahor.

8. If produce falls into a stream, and a person whose hands are Tamei pulls them out of the water, his hands become Tahor and the produce does not become susceptible to Tum'ah.

9. If the person who retrieved the produce from the stream intended to wash his hands, the produce becomes susceptible to Tum'ah.

10. If a Korban is slaughtered without intent for Shechitah, it is Pasul. However, if Chulin is slaughtered without intent, Rebbi Nasan and the Rabanan disagree about the status of the Shechitah.

11. If a deaf-mute, Shoteh, blind person, or insane person is assisted by an ordinary person in becoming Tahor, he may eat Terumah.

A BIT MORE

1. Therefore, if a bird is slaughtered by being shot out of the sky with an arrow, there must be loose earth underneath so that the blood is spilled on top of the earth.

2. If the length of the knife is less than double the width of the animal's neck, it is impossible to perform the Shechitah in one stroke without pressing down on the neck, an act that invalidates the Shechitah.

3. However, a scalpel with decorative horns, or a needle, may not be used for Shechitah.

4. However, if a knife simply falls out of one's hands and slaughters an animal on the way down, everyone agrees that it is not a valid Shechitah.

5. This is in accordance with the view of Rebbi Nasan, who maintains that intent is not required for Shechitah.

6. According to Rav Nachman, she is Tehorah for her husband because an unintentional immersion is valid for Chulin, but not for Terumah.

7. However, if one throws the utensils into the arc of the wave that is suspended in the air, they remain Tamei, because an immersion in the air is not valid.

8. Although he had no intent to purify his hands, his hands become Tahor because intent is not necessary for immersion for Chulin. The produce does not become susceptible to Tum'ah because he did not want to wet his hands; he only wanted to retrieve the produce. Therefore, the water on his hands does not make the produce susceptible to Tum'ah.

9. Since he wanted to wet his hands, the water on his hands causes the produce to become susceptible to Tum'ah. Even if he did not want the produce to become wet, the wetness is considered l'Ratzon because any liquid which was l'Ratzon in the beginning makes the produce susceptible to Tum'ah, even if it was not l'Ratzon at the end.

10. According to Rebbi Nasan, even if one did not intend to make any sort of cut at all, it is a valid Shechitah for Chulin. The Rabanan maintain that one must intend at least to make a cut, but it is not necessary to have intent to slaughter.

11. If they are assisted with their examination at the time of their Veses, and also with their immersion at the time of their Taharah, they may eat Terumah.
