MENACHOS 99 (14 Sivan ) - Dedicated by Doug Rabin in memory of his mother, Leah Miriam bat Yisroel (Lucy) Rabin, in honor of her Yahrzeit.

SUMMARY

1. Although Shlomo ha'Melech made ten Shulchanos, the Lechem ha'Panim was placed only on the Shulchan of Moshe Rabeinu, according to the Tana Kama. Rebbi Elazar bar Shamu'a disagrees.

2. Although Shlomo ha'Melech made ten Menoros, the Kohanim only lit the Menorah of Moshe Rabeinu, according to the Tana Kama. Rebbi Elazar bar Shamu'a disagrees.

3. Rebbi Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah says that there were two tables in the Ulam near the entrance of the Heichal, one made of silver and one made of gold.

4. An item can ascend in holiness, but it cannot descend in holiness.

5. Both the second set of Luchos and the broken Luchos were placed in the Aron.

6. Sometimes one is rewarded for Bitul Torah as though he learned Torah.

7. Reish Lakish maintains that one who forgets one word of his Torah learning transgresses a Lav. Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak maintains that he transgresses three Lavim.

8. Two Kohanim removed the two stacks of the Lechem ha'Panim on Shabbos. As they removed them from the Shulchan, another two Kohanim placed the two new stacks of Lechem ha'Panim on the Shulchan, in order to fulfill the requirement that the breads be "Tamid," a constant presence on the Shulchan, according to the Tana Kama.

9. Rebbi Yosi maintains that even if the new stacks of the Lechem ha'Panim were placed on the Shulchan only after the old piles were removed, it is still regarded as "Tamid."

10. According to Rebbi Yosi, even if one learns only one Perek in the morning and one Perek at night, he has fulfilled the requirement that "the Torah shall not depart from your mouth."

11. According to Rebbi Yishmael, it is forbidden to learn Chochmas Yevanis, even if one has learned the entire Torah, because of the verse, "You shall toil in it (the Torah) day and night." Rebbi Yonasan disagrees.

A BIT MORE

1. Rebbi Elazar bar Shamu'a says that sometimes they placed the Lechem ha'Panim on one Shulchan, and sometimes on another.

2. Rebbi Elazar bar Shamu'a maintains that sometimes they lit one Menorah, and sometimes they lit another.

3. When the Lechem ha'Panim was brought toward the Heichal, it was placed on the silver table in the Ulam for a short time before it was placed on the Shulchan in the Heichal. When the Lechem ha'Panim was removed from the Shulchan in the Heichal, it was placed on the gold table in the Ulam until the Bazichin were burned on the Mizbe'ach.

4. Therefore, the Lechem ha'Panim was placed first on the silver table before it was placed on the golden Shulchan. Only after it was removed from the Shulchan was it placed on a gold table.

5. The Chachamim learn from here that if a Talmid Chacham forgot his Torah (through no fault of his own), he still must be treated with respect.

6. If one is Mevatel Torah for the purpose of accompanying a Mes to his final resting place, or in order to bring a Kalah to the Chupah, he is rewarded as though he was learning Torah during that time.

7. However, if the Talmid Chacham was not at fault forgetting his Torah, he has transgressed no Lav.

8. Four Kohanim entered from the south side of the Shulchan. Two of them removed the two stacks of the Lechem ha'Panim and the other two removed the Bazichin. Four other Kohanim entered from the north side of the Shulchan. Two of them placed the two new stacks of Lechem ha'Panim on the Shulchan at the same time that the other Kohanim removed the two old stacks. The other two placed the new Bazichin on the Shulchan.

9. According to Rebbi Yosi, "Tamid" implies that no night should pass without the Lechem ha'Panim on the Shulchan.

10. Rebbi Shimon bar Yochai maintains that even if one recites Keri'as Shema in the morning and in the evening, he fulfills the requirement that "the Torah shall not depart from your mouth."

11. According to Rebbi Yonasan. the verse, "You shall toil in it (the Torah) day and night," is not teaching an obligation, but rather is relating a blessing.
