MENACHOS 96 - dedicated by Mrs. Rita Grunberger of Queens, N.Y., in loving memory of her husband, Reb Yitzchok Yakov ben Eliyahu Grunberger. Irving Grunberger helped many people quietly in an unassuming manner and he is dearly missed by all who knew him. His Yahrzeit is 10 Sivan.

SUMMARY

1. The kneading, shaping, and baking of the Chavisei Kohen Gadol are done inside the Azarah, even on Shabbos.

2. The grinding and sifting of the flour for the Chavisei Kohen Gadol does not override Shabbos, but rather it is done on Erev Shabbos.

3. The Shulchan was ten Tefachim by five Tefachim, according to Rebbi Yehudah. Rebbi Meir maintains that the Shulchan was twelve Tefachim by six Tefachim.

4. The Lechem ha'Panim was ten Tefachim by five Tefachim. The length of the Lechem ha'Panim was placed along the width of the Shulchan.

5. The width of the Lechem ha'Panim filled the entire length of the Shulchan, according to Rebbi Yehudah. According to Rebbi Meir, there was a two-Tefach space between the breads.

6. Aba Shaul maintains that according to Rebbi Meir, the Bazichin of the Lechem ha'Panim were placed in the space between the breads. The Chachamim disagree.

7. Four Senifin support the breads on both sides of the Shulchan, and 28 Kanim are placed between the breads.

8. There is a disagreement about whether the Misgeres of the Shulchan was below the surface of the Shulchan or above the surface.

9. According to the opinion that the Misgeres was below the surface of the Shulchan, a wooden plate that can be used on both sides is susceptible to Tum'ah even if it lacks a receptacle.

10. A wooden utensil which is very large and is kept in one place is not susceptible to Tum'ah. Nevertheless, the Shulchan was susceptible to Tum'ah because it was raised and displayed to the Olei Regel.

11. A marble-plated table that has a non-plated portion that is large enough to hold a cup is susceptible to Tum'ah, according to the Rabanan.

A BIT MORE

1. The half-Isaron measure that is used for the Chavisin is sanctified. Therefore, it is used only inside the Azarah. The baking is done even on Shabbos, because the Chavisin are sanctified with Kedushas ha'Guf. If they would be baked on Erev Shabbos, they would become Pasul with Linah.

2. Since the grinding and sifting can be done even on Erev Shabbos, it may not be done on Shabbos. Anything that can be done on Erev Shabbos may not be done on Shabbos.

3. The Torah states that the Shulchan was two Amos by one Amah. According to Rebbi Yehudah, each Amah used in the measurement of the utensils of the Beis ha'Mikdash was only five Tefachim. Rebbi Meir maintains that each Amah was a standard Amah of six Tefachim.

4. According to Rebbi Yehudah, the Lechem ha'Panim was folded up two and a half Tefachim at the sides, so that its length fit into the width of the Shulchan, which was five Tefachim. According to Rebbi Meir, it was folded up two Tefachim at the sides, because the width of the Shulchan was six Tefachim.

5. According to Rebbi Meir, the length of the Shulchan was twelve Tefachim, and the width of the Lechem ha'Panim was only five Tefachim. Therefore, there was a space of two Tefachim between the breads.

6. According to the Chachamim, the Bazichin were placed on the breads.

7. There are two Senifin at each side of the Shulchan. Three Kanim are placed between the breads on both sides of the Shulchan. Underneath the top bread, only two Kanim are placed, in order to allow some air to circulate between the breads.

8. Even according to the opinion that the Misgeres was above the surface of the Shulchan, the breads were not placed on the Misgeres because it was slanted away from the Shulchan.

9. Since the Misgeres was below the surface of the Shulchan, the plate of the Shulchan did not have a receptacle. Nevertheless, the Shulchan was susceptible to Tum'ah. According to the opinion that the Misgeres was above the surface of the Shulchan, the plate of the Shulchan had a receptacle, and, therefore, there is no proof that a plate without a receptacle is susceptible to Tum'ah.

10. The miracle of the Shulchan was displayed to the Olei Regel: the bread remained hot even after it was on the Shulchan for many days.

11. A stone utensil is not susceptible to Tum'ah, and thus a utensil which is plated with marble is also not susceptible to Tum'ah, unless a significant portion of it was not plated.
