SUMMARY

1. If a garment is large enough to cover the head and the majority of the body of a minor, and it is large enough that an adult would walk with it in the marketplace for a short period, it is obligated to have Tzitzis.

2. If wool Tzitzis are placed on a linen garment which is too small to be obligated to have Tzitzis, the prohibition of Sha'atnez applies.

3. If a Talis is doubled over, according to the Rabanan it is obligated to have Tzitzis. According to Rebbi Shimon, it is exempt from Tzitzis, because if the Talis will be unfolded the Tzitzis will be in the middle.

4. There is a disagreement about whether a four- cornered garment is obligated to have Tzitzis when it is not being worn.

5. If a person avoids putting himself in a circumstance in which he is obligated to fulfill a Mitzvas Aseh, he will be punished at a time of Divine wrath.

6. If a person designates a garment for his shrouds, everyone agrees that the garment is not obligated to have Tzitzis. However, when he dies, Tzitzis are placed on it.

7. If a four-cornered garment tears more than three fingerbreadths from the edge of the garment, it may be repaired. If it tears within three fingerbreadths of the edge, there is a disagreement about whether it may be repaired.

8. One may not cut off a corner of a garment with the Tzitzis attached to it and sew it on to another garment. One is permitted to remove the Tzitzis from one garment and place it on another garment.

9. The strings of Tzitzis other than the Techeles must be the same color as the garment. If the garment is the color of Techeles, two of the strings should be a different color, and they should not be similar to the color of the Techeles.

10. Rav says that Tzitzis may be removed from one garment and attached to another, a Ner Chanukah may be used to light another Ner Chanukah, and the Halachah follows Rebbi Shimon with regard to dragging a chair across a dirt floor on Shabbos. Shmuel disagrees with all three rulings.

11. Beis Shamai says that four strings of Tzitzis must be attached to every corner of a four-cornered garment. Beis Hillel says that three Tzitzis must be attached.

A BIT MORE

1. However, if an adult would be embarrassed to walk with it in the marketplace even for a short period, even if it is large enough to cover the head and the majority of a minor, it is exempt from Tzitzis.

2. A garment which is too small to cover the head and the majority of the body of a minor is exempt from Tzitzis. However, one is liable for Sha'atnez even for a small garment.

3. Rebbi Shimon agrees that if the Talis was doubled over and then sewn together it is obligated to have Tzitzis.

4. According to Shmuel and Rabah bar Huna, a garment which is fit to be worn is obligated to have Tzitzis even when it is not being worn. According to the angel of Rav Katina, it is obligated to have Tzitzis only when it is being worn.

5. For example, if a person avoids wearing a four-cornered garment, even though he is exempt from Tzitzis, he is punished for not obligating himself to fulfill the Mitzvah of Tzitzis.

6. Tzitzis are placed on the shrouds upon his death in order to avoid "mocking a pauper," mocking the Mes because he is exempt from Mitzvos.

7. According to Rebbi Meir, it may not be repaired because of the concern that the remnants of the string which was used to sew the repair will be used for Tzitzis and it is Pasul, since it was not placed there for the sake of the Mitzvah. However, if the tear is more than three fingerbreadths away from the edge, there is no concern, because Tzitzis must be attached within three fingerbreadths of the edge.

8. One is forbidden to remove the corner of a garment and place it on another garment, because the Tzitzis must have been placed on the corner of the garment which is being worn. These Tzitzis were placed on the corner of a different garment.

9. However, if b'Di'eved the two strings other than the Techeles strings are similar to the color of Techeles, then if there are only four strings altogether it is Pasul. If there are eight strings on each corner, four of Techeles and four of another color, it is valid.

10. According to Rebbi Shimon, on Shabbos one is permitted to perform an act which results in a Melachah being done unintentionally. Hence, one may drag a chair across the ground on Shabbos, even though as a result he causes a ditch to be made in the ground, which is a Toldah of the Melachah of plowing. Since the formation of the ditch is an unintentional result of his act, and it is not an inevitable result, it is permitted.

11. THE FOUR TZITZIS SHOULD BE DOUBLED OVER TO MAKE EIGHT STRINGS, AND EACH STRING SHOULD HANG LOOSE FOR AT LEAST FOUR FINGERBREADTHS ACCORDING TO BEIS SHAMAI, AND THREE FINGERBREADTHS ACCORDING TO BEIS HILLEL.
